Woven Baskets and Natural Dyes: An Exploration of Color and Form

This two-day workshop will explore the possibilities of basket weaving through experimental forms and structures, natural dye, surface treatments, and the integration of found and alternative weaving materials.
The class will focus on introductory round and twined basketry techniques and how to use them to create sculptural forms, structures and vessels. Additionally, students will learn to dye basketry reed using dyes derived from natural materials such as roots, flowers, and leaves.
Bring your wild ideas and creative brain. All levels welcome.

This class will be team taught by Chicago based artist and designer Dee Clements and High Desert Observatory’s Emily Endo.
Dee Clements is a process-based designer who has a deep love of and interest in materials and craft. She holds an MFA in 3D Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art and BFA in Fiber and Materials Studies and Sculpture from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago.
