Perfumery and Hollow-Core Cast Vessels
Perfumery and Hollow-Core Cast Vessels
Dates: Oct 22 - Oct. 26
Instructor: Michael and Emily Endo
“Perfume straddles the line between the tangible and intangible, the earthly and the ethereal, the real and the magical.” – Mandy Aftel
In this two-part workshop, instructors Emily and Michael Endo will cover the process of casting intricate hollow-core glass vessels and the fundamentals of perfume construction and design. This course fuses glass casting with history, and sensory exploration. Students will be introduced to the hollow-core process and will use plant extractions, and aroma molecules to create their own individual scent.
The first section will cover the process of creating a cast vessel using an adaptation of the core-forming process. Core-forming is one of the oldest forms of glass vessel making, and the process has been adapted for lost-wax kiln-casting. This includes hollow-core mold making, wax sculpting, firing schedule development, cold-working, and color considerations. Students will have the opportunity to design a unique vessel and lid.
The second section of the course will guide students through introductory perfume formulation. The class will discuss fragrance history and its intersections with glass as well as perfume structure, material families, extraction processes, and blending methods. Participants will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of aroma molecules and high quality botanical essences. Each student will leave with their own custom blended alcohol based perfume and cast glass vessel.
